Introduction ::

The central library, Asansol Engineering College: a gateway to knowledge resources is one of the central services to Asansol Engineering College. As a proud partner in the Institute’s march towards it’s vision, it plays a vital role in acquisition, organization and dissemination of knowledge. It has put in place policies and procedures, systems and services and the ambience that facilitate creation of new knowledge. It has an excellent collection of both print and electronic books, journals and other learning resources.

It has adequate infrastructures to meet it’s requirements, has computerized all it’s operations using Libsys Software and provide access to the collection through on-line public access catalogue. The Central Library is well equipped with all modern facilities and resources. Asansol Engineering College is deeply engaged to provide a world class facility to it’s users.

Asansol Engineering college Library System consists of a central library and four departmental libraries. All students, faculty members and employees of the institute are entitled to make use of the library facilities on taking library membership. The library besides having a huge collection of books on engineering, science and humanities offers library services through it’s various divisions.
Central library serves the academic needs of about 2000 students and nearly 100 faculty members and other staff of the institute. At present the nearly automated library is equipped with high speed servers and computers interconnected to the rest of the computers of the institute.

Only a few institutes in West Bengal (including Govt. Colleges / Universities) subscribe IEL Online and Asansol Engineering College is one of them.

Library Computerization ::

The automated library uses computerization for circulation of books and browsing of some journals. A user is provided single bar-coded identity card and bar coding of books is in process. In-house functions like acquisition, cataloging and circulation are automated using the Libsys automation software.

The library uses Libsys software package which is an integrated multi-user library management system that supports all in-house operations of the library. The Libsys consists of modules on acquisition, cataloging, circulation, serials, article indexing and OPAC. Retrospective conversion of records has been completed and more than 35000 bibliographic records of books available in the library can now be accessed through the Libsys OPAC. The Database of books available in the library is being updated on day to day basis with details of recently acquired books. Records of all the library patrons have also been created in the Libsys package. The editing and updating activities are in progress.

 
Bar Code-Based Circulation ::

The Libsys package has been successfully implemented for the circulation activities All faculty and staff members are being migrated to the new computerized database. The package has also been implemented for acquisition and cataloging activities. The computerization for serials system is in progress.

 
Network Connection ::

The library is a part of the fiber-optic base campus – LAN. The Library has its own Sub-LAN consisting of 30 terminals, two servers to support Libsys OPAC services and other in-house computerization activities within the library. The Library has 30 Pentium machines including 10 exclusively earmarked for the users for CD-ROM and internet searches. All terminals and servers available in the library are connected to the campus LAN.

The library has a good collection of books on science and technology including physics, chemistry and mathematics. Besides, Library also has a good collection in the field of social science and humanities.
